Kooky Nuts Pop, the flagship compilation of Istotne Nagr., arrives at your stereo for the fifth time with a whole new crew on board and new exciting ideas about how to make weird music sound entertaining.
Side A, more jolly and upbeat, kicks off with a little waltz by the skilled storyteller Monsieur Pompier's Travelling Freakshow and continues with an equally amusing tune by the French composer Stéphane Lapotre aka Domotic, who decided to add a bit of singing, exclusively for this release. Next, the Dutch producer Pels plays tricks with changing tempo and stretched vocals, Harvey Rothman pumps up the energy using his truly crazy sampledelic craft, the acclaimed audio-visual duo Gangpol & Mit take us to a colourful parade, and the fresh electronic project JADIS 3000 (formerly known as Mr Kindhoover / Extra Tourist, also one of the Darling Dada label founders) launches cavalcades of complex footworkish beats. Finally, part one ends with Julek Ploski's majestic rave anthem with a medieval twist.
JPN Kasai sets the mood for a more laidback side B with his original wonky take on Japanese folk music, followed by Dida’s gentle melodies and relaxed beats from the French acid mistress Miss Bean (aka Musique Chienne). Things get slightly more melancholic with Ehh Hahah’s minimalistic wobbly composition and the “Pigeon Song” by Boule Goes Boing, a project that began as a tribute to 80s synth band Ptôse. Kooky Nuts Pop wouldn’t be complete without a skweee track, this time delivered by Kid Kozmoe (who lately debuted on Istotne Nagr. with his EP). And, last but not least, a beautiful ambient piece by Montréal-based producer Fade Runner backed with a perfect glitchy "goodbye" tune from the mysterious Limits Join Loulou.
I hereby thank and bow my head before all the wonderful artists who decided to contribute their music to another episode of this wacky series. Without you, pop music would be less kooky!
